Our Architecture and Sustainability Program was created to broaden the minds of students to the wealth of historical and modern design in Northern Africa. The influences of Andalusian, Middle Eastern and European architecture, combined with the traditional Berber vernacular make the landscape of Moroccan architecture diverse and unique from anywhere else in the world. With a growing emphasis for sustainable architecture, this program will give students the knowledge to implement traditional and modern practices in their future designs. Core components of this program are tours and visits to historical sites and modern buildings, as well as lectures from local architects and academics, focused on using sustainable materials and practices. Visits will include ancient Roman ruins with their historic foundations and pillars still intact, traditional medinas and their vernacular stonework and hand-laid tiles, and the Hassan II Mosque with its majestic design and massive construction. Students will also be staying with host families and see the designs of common households with their uses and challenges. During this time, the students will have the opportunity to learn some Arabic through a few language classes and by interacting with their host families.

  • Meet with local architects and academics to hear about current events in sustainability
  • Learn and practice Arabic through language classes & immersion with homestay family members and locals
  • Connect with master artisans in the imperial city of Fez and Marrakesh
